Waterside B - 26th Feb
the weather is looking up for the weekend and the delayed start of the Waterside series. There is however a lock Closure - Monkey Marsh Lock - Located just West of the Thatcham Level crossing - Lock 90 - Requires a portage at the low bridge before the lock. This is where the towpath is closed.
The Lock itself is undergoing lock gate replacement necessitating large lifting gear etc and is designated a "Construction Site" and NO access day or Night. Portage is on the left at the low bridge, follow track into field bypassing the site. Re-enter the canal near the road bridge. Do not enter the site and attempt to negotiate passage as some have tried and not too friendly.
More information will be available on the Waterside Website.
With the success of the Waterside series come the issues with the number of competitors and supporters, please do represent the sport in a positive way. Here are 2 documents from the Waterside website on Paddler and Supporter Etiquette..
Gent Marathon Development Trip - 24th March 2012
It is important that everyone is fully aware that a development trip is not designed for our top athletes, although there may be some invited. The criteria for invitation to the Gent Trip is solely based on the marathon training days (held at Longridge on 29th Jan and Norwich on 18th Feb). The invitations will not be purely based on the performance of the athletes at these events, the history of the athlete and the developmental effect of participating in the Gent Marathon will also be considerations.
As with all previous development trips if you are an athlete who wishes to be considered for invitation, you must complete an availability form and return it as detailed on the form. Download Here (note this form needs to be returned by 20th February).
MRC Meetings
Ultimately the sport of Marathon Canoeing is owned by the paddlers, the MRC are the body that has been elected to run the sport for the good of the athletes. So the MRC needs your input, does your club have any issues? is there an idea you have for the committee to consider?
The Marathon Racing Committee meeting on the 10th of Feb was postponed due to the bad weather, this meeting has been rescheduled for the 2nd March 2012. Any clubs having issues that they feel relevant and wish the committee to address or consider are asked to contact the Secretary or Chairman ( Diane Bates at
