Here we are again with the latest and possibly the not so up to date news from the flatwater scene. Lots of little bits here and there to hopefully inform and help. No new items from the general populace though so its all down to the people who volunteer to help the sport run. There is a great deal on the BCU and Marathon web sites though so to be up to date keep looking at them.
Coaching Coaching guru John Handyside would like to remind all those coaches who are halfway through old style coaching system training to get into contact with him through the BCU office in Bingham to make arrangements for this to be completed. There seems to be much confusion about just what has to be done on the new system even though there has been a great deal in print to make it clear that “old style” coaches do NOT have to do anything if they do not want to. All they have to do is to make sure their normal upkeep training is maintained. Those who want to train on the new system do not have to do everything all at once and can train over a period. Contact JH for all the information if you are not sure.
September Regatta 2011. The September Regatta will be one week before normal in 2011 to allow for the pre Olympic Regatta to be seen by all those interested. Obviously this regatta to test the Olympic systems will be at Eton.

Wiki Daniels, the brain behind the Marathon HRM system has been awarded an outstanding Contribution award at the Canoe England Volunteer awards at Wyboston Lakes in Bedford. Presented by BCU board and Marathon committee member Alan Laws. Wiki was nominated for this award for developing the Hasler Race Management computer programme. This programme calculates and records results providing a welcome relief to volunteers. Wiki is continuously improving the programme which now enables calculations of athlete promotions and demotions; records rankings and provides an entry system for events.
Originally designed for Hasler marathon events, Wiki has worked hard to ensure that the programme can also be used for lightening races as well as the National Marathon Championships.
She is always available by phone or email to help the 50 race organisers who use the programme, responding with her usual patient, cheerful and positive manner.
As a member of Reading Canoe Club, Wiki’s devotion has been outstanding and simplified an enormous task resulting in an improved quality and timing of results to paddlers.

The GB Marathon team had one of its best ever results at the 2009 World Championships with silver medals for Louisa Sawers and Ben Brown and bronze medals for Lani Belcher, Tom Daniels and Dean Terry. We also fared well earlier in the summer at the European Championships with several strong performances and a well deserved bronze medal in the junior men's K2 for Jonnie Tye and James Webster.
Domestically we have had good racing and good support in most regions at the regional Hasler races and in the longer distance winter races.
So we look forward with enthusiasm to racing in 2010 and hope we can match or better the racing in 2009.
