Hasler Finals Regional Club Qualifications – change of regional club allocation

The Hasler Finals and associated series of regional qualifying races are based on club teams rather than individual paddlers. In response to suggestions made to the MRC, from March 2013 onwards, the system of allocating the number of places for clubs qualifying in each region, will be altered from the current one, where each region has 4 places, with the exception of Combined Services who have 1 place and Combined East and West Midlands, who have 8 places, to the one outlined below.

The new system is based on the number of clubs who have actively participated in the previous season, as indicated by Hasler Race results, recorded on the MRC Website. Each region will automatically have 2 qualifying places, irrespective of the number of active clubs. Each region will receive an extra qualifying place for each 3 clubs in excess of 4.

Number of Active Clubs       Number of Qualifying places
1-6 2
7-9 3
10-12 4
13-15 5
16-18 6
19-21      7
22-24      8
25-27 9

This system will produce a similar number of clubs to the present one, but more fairly distributed across the regions. It may produce a slight increase in the number of paddlers at Hasler Finals as more active clubs are expected to qualify.

For the 2012/2013 season the allocation will be as follows:

Region Clubs Qualifying
Services 1
Eastern 4
London  & South East 4
Midlands 7
Northern 2
North West 2
Scotland                             2
Southern                             6
South West 4
Wales 2
Yorkshire & Humberside 2
Total eligible for Final 36

The number of places allocated to regions will be reviewed at the end of each season. The number of places allocated will not change within a season, with the exception of 2012/13.

The MRC believe that this system will allow more clubs from the most active regions to reach the finals, prompt healthy competition for qualifying places within regions and yet keep the size of the final of similar manageable proportions to the previous system. It also allows for the development of more clubs within a region.
